Meta Restructures Its AI Unit Under ‘Superintelligence Labs’

Meta is reorganizing its artificial intelligence efforts to focus on creating AI “superintelligence.” This strategic move aims to consolidate all AI-related teams under one new division called Meta Superintelligence Labs.

New AI Division To Centralize Efforts

According to an internal memo reviewed by Bloomberg, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced that all AI teams will now operate within this newly formed group. The lab will be led by Alexandr Wang, former CEO of data-labeling startup Scale AI, who will take on the role of Chief AI Officer. Wang will collaborate closely with Nat Friedman, former GitHub CEO, who will oversee AI products and applied research at Meta.

Ambition To Lead The AGI Race

Zuckerberg’s push reflects the company’s ambition to lead the race toward artificial general intelligence (AGI). This has involved acquiring AI companies and recruiting top talent from leading firms. Earlier this month, Meta invested $14.3 billion in Scale AI, bringing Wang on board in the process.

Strengthening AI Team With Top Talent

Additionally, Meta has attracted 11 new AI researchers from competing companies, including some previously unreported hires such as Google DeepMind’s principal researcher Pei Sun and Anthropic engineer Joel Pobar, further strengthening its AI team.
