Google Starts Showing Ads in Third-Party AI Chatbots
Google’s AdSense advertising network began supporting ads inside users’ chats with some third-party AI chatbots earlier this year, according to a report from Bloomberg. The company rolled out this feature following tests with AI search startups iAsk and Liner, as cited by anonymous sources familiar with the matter. The move marks an expansion of Google’s efforts to integrate advertising in new spaces as AI chatbots continue to grow in popularity.
Google’s Effort to Capitalize on the AI Chatbot Trend
“AdSense for Search is available for websites that want to show relevant ads in their conversational AI experiences,” a Google spokesperson said. The company appears to be seeking ways to capitalize on the increasing use of AI chatbots such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and Perplexity for web searches and answering common queries. In line with this, Google has invested heavily in AI tools and products, including large language models and frequent updates to its Gemini AI apps and models. Additionally, late last year, Google began showing ads in AI Overviews, which are AI-generated summaries for certain Search queries.
