Google Assistant Is Leaving, Gemini Is Taking Over

Google announced that Google Assistant is being phased out. The company plans to transition most Android devices to Gemini instead, including phones, tablets, headphones, car assistants, and other connected devices. The only exceptions will be devices with 2GB of RAM or those running incompatible Android versions.

While this is the first official confirmation that Google Assistant is on its way out, it doesn’t come as a surprise. Gemini has already become the default assistant on most mainstream Android devices, including those from Google, Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus, and other brands. Google claims that “millions of people have already made the switch,” though it’s questionable how many did so willingly. The author, for example, initially resisted but ultimately accepted the change, realizing that keeping up with technology means adapting.

The Challenges of Transition

The shift from Google Assistant to Gemini has been anything but smooth. Google has gradually reduced the functionality that many users relied on for smart home control and other voice commands. This has led to frustration, especially for those who built routines around Google Assistant. The author worries about an old car setup that relied on Assistant, as well as a Lenovo smart clock used daily to turn off lights and set alarms.

Many users are already voicing their disappointment in online forums, realizing that their Google Assistant-powered devices may soon become obsolete. So far, Google and device manufacturers have not provided clear recommendations on how to handle the transition.

The Future of Digital Assistants

In some ways, Gemini is a more advanced digital assistant. It offers better conversational capabilities, allowing users to talk through thoughts and ideas. However, its responses are not always accurate, and at times, it can be frustrating.

Still, the evolution of digital assistants is clear—they are becoming more interactive and personalized. Now that Gemini has reached this stage, Google is ready to roll it out on a larger scale.
