ChatGPT on macOS Gains Direct Code Editing Capabilities
ChatGPT, OpenAI’s AI-powered chatbot platform, can now directly edit code on macOS. The latest version of the app supports editing in popular developer tools like Xcode, VS Code, and JetBrains. Users can optionally enable an “auto-apply” mode, allowing ChatGPT to make changes without requiring additional clicks.
Availability and Rollout for Code Editing Features
Subscribers to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team can access the code editing feature immediately by updating their macOS app. OpenAI announced that the feature will roll out to Enterprise, Edu, and free-tier users next week. In a post on X, Alexander Embiricos, part of OpenAI’s product team, mentioned that the ChatGPT app for Windows will also receive direct code editing capabilities “soon.”
Competition with Existing AI Coding Tools
Direct code editing builds on OpenAI’s “work with apps” feature, launched in beta in November 2024. This feature allows ChatGPT to read and modify code within certain development environments, reducing the need to copy and paste code snippets manually. With this update, ChatGPT competes more directly with other AI-powered coding tools like Cursor and GitHub Copilot. OpenAI is also reportedly developing a dedicated product to further support software engineering workflows in the coming months.
AI Code Tools: Balancing Popularity and Reliability Risks
AI coding assistants are rapidly gaining popularity, with the majority оf developers embracing them tо boost productivity. GitHub’s recent survey revealed that many developers have integrated AI tools into their workflows, with some startups generating up tо 95% оf their codebase with AI assistance. However, these tools aren’t without drawbacks: studies show developers often spend extra time debugging AI-generated code and addressing security vulnerabilities. A Google report highlighted that while AI speeds up code reviews and improves documentation, іt may also compromise delivery stability.
